This page covers my creation of the campaign setting, the players involved and their various characters. Although not necessary, a familiarity with D&D rules (v.4 preferably) may assist enjoyment of this Blog and its contents - I am trying though, to make it generally accessible as a purely narrative exercise.
*** 2015 Update ***
After a lengthy break and with my friend Phil's 'Scales of War' campaign drawing to a close, I intend to re-start this campaign- however I will do so under v.5 of the D&D rule system which will require a few alterations to the characters and classes.

Phil W - 'Kadim-Sul' the Genasi Eldritch Knight.
Phil T - 'Faweh' the Elf Rogue.
Mark - 'Edmund' the Human Fighter,
Ian - 'Puck' the Gnome (spell caster).
Richard - 'Verix' the Human Cleric.
*** Personae Dramatis 2014 ***
Adult players:
Phil W - 'Kadim-Sul' the Genasi swordmage.
Phil T - 'Faweh' the Eladrin rogue.
John - 'Janus' the Elf ranger.
Mark - 'Edmund' the Human fighter.

younger players:
Harvey - 'Zan-Kyri' the Genasi wizard.
James - 'Khaan' the Dragonborn Paladin.
Richard / Ian - 'Verix' the Human Cleric.
Ed - 'Neebin' the Halfling sorceror / 'Varis' the Elf Druid.
The players are my friends, with the younger team being their various sons.
Both Phil's, John, James & Harvey started the game, with Mark & Richard joining shortly after.
James, Richard and Harvey have now left to attend University and George has changed interests; however Ed being a little older now, has also joined us.
John had a long work enforced break from gaming and now other commitments keep him away on Tuesday evenings, however an old friend Ian has returned from Canada and aims to rejoin our groups to become a regular player.
*** Background Sources ***
I'm using the two Playstation "Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance" games for inspiration, melding the story-lines and making suitable alterations to suit an RPG and its rule set.
The player characters would need to be at certain levels to survive particular opponents; but rather than just kick them off at a higher level, I utilised the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide encounters - set in the northern town of Loudwater - to settle them in and add some levels to the characters. It proved easy enough to link the the encounter ideas into my theme; the action and hooks are detailed on other pages here.
Waterdeep was the first sizeable city the party would spend time in - I've opened a page of background for it, as well as a separate page for the Undermountain dungeon complex below the city (in case the party descended there); Baldur's Gate will be next major city the story-line visits and I'll expand that page shortly, some other campaign sites will gain a page or a mention, as needed. I've also detailed a brief timeline, alluding to the Spell Scourge (although I'm ignoring its magic effects in the game), as general known background for both players and others readers here.
I have given the Zhentarim their own page, both for their wide reaching influence over western Faerun and reasons which will become more apparent as the storyline develops.
